The covert coat was originally designed in the nineteenth century for hunting, riding, and other gentlemanly pursuits, but it was quickly adopted in town as well as country. It takes its name from the tightly woven twill cloth – covert cloth – which resists wear and was designed to obscure dust and mud. more formal occasions
